What happens when you charge and discharge a LiFePO4 battery at the same time?

As discussed in Episode 43 (hamradioworkbench.com/hrwb043-winter-field-day-and-more-baycon-2018) of the Ham Radio Workbench, I demonstrate what happens when you try to simultaneously charge and discharge a LiFePO4 battery as you would when using a power module in the field. This is a direct demonstration of Kirchoff's Current Law.

I've been finishing wood for years professionally...bottom line, you can watch all the instructional videos you want, wood accepts stain willy nilly, so try to get it as balanced as possible, and whenever possible, use a spray gun for the best outcome. Nice job

Am I the only one seeing several glaring issues? What if your battery is dead and your load exceeds the external supply? Or what if your battery is fully charged already and supply power exceeds the load demand? You didn't really talk at all about under and over voltage protection, the concerns of trickle charging, as well as the potential to overcharge the batteries without any sort of control module managing the battery. Yes, in this simple example you did, it works great. But if you don't account for the other scenarios that most certainly will happen, you can quickly damage your battery at best or a dangerous catastrophic event at worst.

Wow. Thank you so much. I thought they used sophisticated circuits to do this. Similarly, is it safe to say that charging and using a phone at the same is not bad for the battery, apart from the wear due to heat?

I have looked forever for this information. I know people ask without searching first. I know this is an old video but this is exactly what I am trying to do. Is the pwr check required to do this ? He says it has it in parallel power pole/node on that side. Maybe someone can lead me to that so I can duplicate. They don’t make that power check anymore and the new one is out of budget. Is what he is describing is all the positives and negatives connected together. Any help much appreciated

this is helpful thankyou, im confused using a shunt would still be an accurate way to keep tabs on the battery. if you have any thoughts to guide me on that i am needing to incorporate a way to gauge how charged my batteries are, i am in the process of setting everything up... up until now i have charged each of my 100ah lifepos separately and used them separately but i want to transition into them all being in parrellel and hopfully hooked to the charge contolller as well. it sounds like its possible to have it set up where it can be left as it is and charge/discharge. any advice is appreciated im trying to learn if a shunt will do what i need

This panel can put out close to 100 watts ruclips.net/user/postUgkxOqI2yqX0XVrhR2BMJciTWrHJpG8FhJyg when positioned in the appropriate southernly direction, tilted to the optimal angle for your latitude/date, and connected to a higher capacity device than a 500. The built in kickstand angle is a fixed at 50 degrees. Up to 20% more power can be output by selecting the actual date and latitude optimal angle. The 500 will only input 3.5A maximum at 18 volts for 63 watts. Some of the excess power from the panel can be fed into a USB battery bank, charged directly from the panel while also charging a 500. This will allow you to harvest as much as 63 + 15 = 78 watts. If this panel is used to charge a larger device, such as the power station, then its full output potential can be realized.

Great video! just one question, when it comes to let's say 8K Inverter, with a 9.5k Lithium Battery, is there any "RISKS" in terms of overload, heat, too much power in & out? Usually the battery can take more than 10+ Amps from the Solar Panels to charge, whilst the House is using 10+ Amps. Anything I should consider? I know if we go above the Disrcharge limit (~18Amps) the BMS would disconnect), but I was wondering if that would stress the battery out & shorten its lifespan, risk of fire etc. Of course when there's Solar Panels, we shouldn't be Discharging from the Battery anyway.

Great video. We need folks like you on RUclips. I stopped a project because an RVer said charging and discharging at the same time damages the battery. The TV in my RV only works on 120v. So I want to add an inverter drawing power from the house battery of the RV. I have two dedicated battery, engine battery is not used by the house portion of the class C RV. I know when the engine is running the house battery does get charged. Can I turn on the inverter so the family can watch TV while I am driving? I want to connect a 2000w inverter directly to the house battery. I am not worried about the battery aging too soon, just want to make sure doing so would not start a fire. What is your take?

Dude. I knew this. Its why you can connect a 12v led that uses 0.01 amps to a 12v car battery without blowing it up. Somewhere along the way, I forgot it or got confused (or maybe too old or busy to remember important details for something I dont use in everyday life anymore). Ive been looking at solar charging for amateur radio and was worried my 160 watt panel I just got would push too many amps into my battery or charge controller though I knew the battery had a BMS to protect it and the controller had a fuse. Your first 30 seconds just made me drop jaw slap face. The solar panel isnt pushing anything (amps wise) its just able to provide the current as needed by the load up to its rated output if it can beat the required voltage. I cant believe I spent so much time looking at specs and worrying about overloading things. Thank you. Thinking about it now - that would be like me thinking if my radio drew 25 amps but my panel only had 8 amps, I would start to suck the sun out of the sky into the panel just to provide the radio with what it wanted...

So I'm here due to researching for a purpose different than most I see. I have a lifepo4 12v battery serving as my dedicated power source to a multi amp audio system in my RV. I have a 12v 15a ac to dc charger connected to the battery. The audio amps are also connected directly to the battery terminals via distribution block. The lifepo4 battery has a bluetooth BMS that reads -5 total amp when turning on the audio system. Turning on the 15 amp charger causes this reading to then be 10 amps. I believe any audio spikes to draw more than the 15 amp the charger is providing will just pull from the battery. Anyway, I don't see any negative consequences from running this way. Hopes this helps any 12v audiophiles that are looking to combine lifepo4 and another charging source. BTW, the BMS in the Lifepo4 battery i own will shut off current when the battery is 100% charged. That way, I can leave the AC chager always plugged in. Make sure yours can do this if you want to leave connected. I am open to corrections if I have made incorrect statements.

I am thinking of converting my FT-897D to solar, with a small LiPO 3S 2200mah battery inside. I am concerned about the efect of 3 changes to this experiment: (1) Sudden and drastic and ups and downs in current consumption between transmit and receive, not from 1 to 2A but from 1 to 20A, (2) a smaller LiPO battery that would not be able to keep voltage as constant under full load as the one in the video, (3) using a basic charge controller that comes included with cheap portable solar panels. Could sudden voltage drops on transmit trigger switches between the constant voltage and constant current stages of the charge controller and would that pose any threat to the system? Thanks to everyone for the input. 73 de Diego EC1CW
